From Outboard to Overhaul: A Hands-On Journey to Marine Technician
Ethan Swanke, now a Technician in Egg Harbor, NJ, grew up around the marine industry and began his career working on inboard and outboard engines. However, his goal was to work on larger, more complex machinery. Following his dad’s advice, Ethan applied to Indel Power Group’s Technician Apprentice Program and began working as an apprentice at Johnson & Towers in February 2024.
Ethan’s upbringing in the marine industry, thanks to his father’s career, fueled his desire to pursue a similar path. He started working at a local marina on inboard and outboard engines, but realized he wanted more opportunities and began exploring positions involving larger engine maintenance.
His family’s connection to the marine industry introduced him to the team at Johnson & Towers. He reached out to management about the apprentice program, applied, and was brought in for an interview with On-Highway Service Manager, Dillon Boyle, and his future supervisor, Marine Service Manager, Brent Buzby.
“Sorting through candidates can sometimes be challenging. Fortunately, with Ethan, we saw promising qualities of technical aptitude, humbleness, and willingness to grow right away,” says Brent.
Indel Power Group’s Technician Apprentice Program is designed to cultivate these qualities, offering a structured program and practical experience that allows apprentices to develop their skills in one year. The program focuses on developing skills in diagnostics, repair, and maintenance of diesel engines. Ethan’s previous experience and eagerness to advance gave him a strong foundation that Dillon and Brent knew would allow Ethan to succeed in this program.
“I was always mechanically inclined to an extent, but I hadn’t had the opportunity before this to learn even simple tasks like oil changes. I wanted a hands-on approach to learn and work on larger engines. I had tried technical school in the past, and the classroom setting wasn’t the best way for me to learn. I knew this program fit my learning style and would help get me where I wanted to go,” says Ethan.
Ethan notes significant growth over the last year and is eager to continue developing his skills now as a C-level technician.
“Ethan has integrated well with the existing workforce and is respected by his fellow technicians. His desire to acquire OEM certifications and grow his skillset shows us he has a long-term commitment to the company,” says Brent.
When asked about his future, Ethan explains that he wants to continue learning and earn more certifications. He would like to be able to learn more about the computerized control systems and be able to service those as well.
“This program has taught me so much. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a way to get into the industry. If you’re willing to put in the effort, you’ll find success here,” says Ethan.
